Lyme Ag – Lyme Disease Tick Rapid Test
This test does not examine your dog or cat, but the tick removed from them: it shows whether the tick carries Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. This lets you quickly assess the risk after a bite – and know when it is worth contacting your vet.
What does it tell you — and what not?
- It tells you: whether the tick you removed from your pet was infected with Lyme disease.
- It does not tell you: whether the dog or cat itself has caught the infection. Even a bite from an infected tick does not automatically mean that the animal has been infected.
- If the tick is positive, or if the animal later develops symptoms (lethargy, lameness, fever), your vet will investigate further using a blood sample from the animal.
When is the test recommended?
- If you found a tick on your pet and removed it
- After a woodland walk, a hike or during peak tick season
- If the tick may have been attached to the skin for a longer time
- In multi-pet households where ticks are found frequently
How does it work?
-
1
Put on gloves and use the tick remover provided to remove the whole tick from the animal.
-
2
Place the tick in the sample tube and crush it thoroughly with the crushing rod.
-
3
Squeeze the entire contents of the buffer vial into the sample tube, close it tightly and shake well.
-
4
Add 3 drops to the sample well (S) of the cassette and read the result between 5 and 10 minutes, at 15–30 °C.
Reading the result

Positive
The tick was infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. Even a faint T line is positive. Talk to your vet, who will decide whether the animal also needs to be tested.

Negative
No antigen detected in the tick. Even so, keep an eye on your pet over the following weeks and contact your vet if you notice any symptoms.

Invalid
No control line, so the result cannot be interpreted. Repeat with a new cassette and a new sample.
Good to know
- The tick and anything it has touched are potentially infectious – including to humans. Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards.
- Perform the test immediately after opening the foil pouch; humidity and temperature can affect the result.
- Each newly removed tick can be tested separately.
