At-home diagnostics

What is an at-home rapid test for?

MancsLab's at-home rapid tests use the same immunochromatographic technology as the tests used in veterinary practices – only at home, with a result in 5–10 minutes. If your dog or cat is suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting or lethargy, the test shows whether one of the most common pathogens is behind it: parvovirus, Giardia, panleukopenia, FIV, FeLV, feline coronavirus (FCoV), Lyme disease or heartworm.

It does not replace your vet – it comes before the visit: instead of waiting, you get information straight away that you can take to your vet. For shelters and breeders it is a screening tool when a new animal arrives, before it comes into contact with the others.

Reading the result

Two lines, one line, or none

On the cassette, C is the control line and T is the test line. That's all you need to know.

Rapid test positive result: control and test lines visible

Positive

The pathogen has been detected. Even a faint T line is positive. Take your pet to the vet – and take the cassette with you.

Rapid test negative result: only the control line visible

Negative

Not detected. If symptoms persist, repeat the test after 2–3 days – shedding can be intermittent.

Rapid test invalid result: no control line

Invalid

No C line – the result cannot be evaluated. A result read after 15 minutes is also invalid.

Procedure

How does it work? Three steps

  1. 1

    Sampling

For stool tests, take a fresh sample with the swab provided – no intervention needed. Blood tests need a blood, serum or plasma sample, which is best taken by a vet.

  2. 2

    Preparation

Swirl the swab in the buffer solution ten times, then add 3 drops to the sample well of the cassette.

  3. 3

    Reading

Wait 5–10 minutes. Run the test at a room temperature of 15–30 °C, otherwise the result may be unreliable.

When is a rapid test not enough?

The rapid test is a pre-screening tool. It gives you a quick picture but does not replace a veterinary examination. If the result is positive, always see a vet.

A negative result does not rule everything out either: virus and cyst shedding can be intermittent. If symptoms persist or get worse, see a vet even if the test was negative.

FAQ

What people ask most

How accurate is the at-home rapid test?

It uses the same immunochromatographic technology as the tests used in veterinary practices. Compared with PCR, the parvovirus test shows 98.33% agreement: sensitivity 98.00%, specificity 98.67%, n=300. Every product page shows the validation data for that specific test.

Does sampling hurt the animal?

Not at all for stool tests, because the sample is taken from stool that is already there. For blood tests it is a brief pinprick – blood sampling is best left to a vet, who does it routinely in a few seconds.

When is the best time to test?

For stool tests, a fresh, ideally morning sample is most reliable. With parvovirus, virus shedding peaks 3–5 days after symptoms appear. Blood tests can be done at any time.

How should the tests be stored?

Between 4 and 30 °C, in a dry place, away from light, in the unopened foil pouch. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Run the test itself at 15–30 °C.

Can the same test be used for dogs and cats?

The Giardia, heartworm and Lyme tests are suitable for both. The CPV, CPV/CDV, 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 combo tests are for dogs only; the FIV/FeLV, FPV and FIPV tests are for cats only. This is always stated on the product page.
