FIV/FeLV – Combined Rapid Test for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Feline Leukaemia
Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV, “feline AIDS”) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) are the two most important chronic viral infections in cats. Both can stay symptom-free for years while gradually wearing down the immune system. This combined test checks for both from a single blood sample.
Accuracy – manufacturer validation
The manufacturer validated the two parameters separately:

When is the test recommended?
- Before adopting or taking in a new cat — the most important occasion
- For outdoor cats that have been in fights (FIV is mainly spread through bites)
- Recurring infections that are slow to heal: mouth inflammation, abscesses, upper respiratory problems
- Unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, enlarged lymph nodes
- In multi-cat households, before introducing a new animal
- For breeders, as regular screening of breeding cats
How does it work? Three steps
- 1
Take a fresh blood sample with the pipette provided. Serum and plasma can also be used. It is best to have the blood sample taken by a vet.
- 2
Put the sample into the sample well of the cassette, then add the buffer as described in the manufacturer's instructions.
- 3
Read the result after the time stated in the instructions. The cassette has two separate test lines: one for FIV and one for FeLV.
Reading the result

Positive
The test line that appears shows which pathogen is positive — it can be one of them or both. Even a faint line is positive. See your vet for a confirmatory test.

Negative
Neither pathogen detected. After a recent infection it can take weeks for FIV antibodies to appear, so after a known exposure it is worth repeating the test 60 days later.

Invalid
No control line, so the result cannot be interpreted. Repeat the test with a new cassette.
Good to know
- A cat vaccinated against FIV can be antibody-positive without being infected. If your cat has been vaccinated, tell your vet.
- In kittens up to 6 months of age, maternal antibodies can make the FIV result misleading — repeat testing is needed.
- Some FeLV infections are transient: in many cases the cat overcomes the virus, so a positive result should always be re-checked a few months later.
- A negative cat can live alongside a positive one — but discuss the living arrangements with your vet.
